Stable water isotope records of six firn cores retrieved from two adjacent plateaus on the northern Antarctic Peninsula between 2014 and 2016 are presented and investigated for their connections with firn-core glacio-chemical data, meteorological records and modelling results. Average annual accumulation rates of 2500 kg m−2 a−1 largely reduce the modification of isotopic signals in the snowpack by post-depositional processes, allowing excellent signal preservation in space and time. Comparison of firn-core and ECHAM6-wiso modelled δ18O and d-excess records reveals a large agreement on annual and sub-annual scales, suggesting firn-core stable water isotopes to be representative of specific synoptic situations. The six firn cores exhibit highly similar isotopic patterns in the overlapping period (2013), which seem to be related to temporal changes in moisture sources rather than local near-surface air temperatures. Backward trajectories calculated with the HYSPLIT model suggest that prominent δ18O minima in 2013 associated with elevated sea salt concentrations are related to long-range moisture transport dominated by westerly winds during positive SAM phases. In contrast, a broad δ18O maximum in the same year accompanied by increased concentrations of black carbon and mineral dust corresponds to the advection of more locally derived moisture with northerly flow components (South America) when the SAM is negative.

Summary
The assortment of trillions of microorganisms resident along the human gastrointestinal tract, our gut microbiota, has co-evolved with us over thousands of years. It can influence a plethora of aspects of human physiology, including host metabolism, immunity and even brain function, cognition and behaviour across the lifespan. The gut microbiota and the brain can communicate with one another, directly and indirectly, through immune system modulation, tryptophan metabolism, vagus nerve activity, the enteric nervous system and bioactive microbial by-products, or metabolites produced by the gut microbiome. Indeed, the gut microbiota are responsible for a rich reservoir of novel metabolites and bioactive substances that can have pleiotropic functionalities for the host. Moreover, diet, an easily accessible and thus powerful interventional tool, can act as a modulator of gut-microbial composition and activity, impacting on host physiology. As such, nutrition is seen as one of the major modulators of the gut microbiota. Intriguingly, although psychiatric conditions often include a dietary aspect, much research investigating this link in clinical populations ignores this relationship, missing a key therapeutic avenue. This has led to the concept of nutritional psychiatry, where we can use food and supplements to support mental health and brain function. As a result, it is critical to consider emerging microbiome-targeted dietary approaches with the greatest potential to improve health outcomes in a psychiatric population.

Childhood cardiac arrhythmias may have a long-lasting impact on a family and typically require long-term medical follow-up. Whereas some arrhythmias are benign, others can be life threatening and require significant medical care. As with many chronic illnesses, it is important to study the potential psychosocial effects of childhood arrhythmias and how they may impact a child's quality of life. The purpose of this study was to create a quality of life measure specific to childhood arrhythmias and to describe the current psychosocial functioning of this population. A total of 46 families participated in a one-time paper and pencil assessment during their regularly scheduled clinic visits. Results indicated promise for the validity and reliability of this new measure. Children in the current sample also demonstrated a high degree of resiliency. Additional analyses with larger samples will be needed to verify the psychometric properties of this measure. Overall, the high functioning of many of these children despite medical trauma is promising. Future studies should consider using some screening measures to decide which children may be most in need of intervention.

I am pleased to be part of this symposium to celebrate the life and work of Peter Bachrach. Although my focus is the relevance of Peter's ideas of power to law, I want to begin with some personal comments as well as raise some final thoughts, drawing on others' contributions. Like so many of Peter's other students, I adored him. Peter's joy in ideas, his passion for participatory democracy, his love of teaching, and his extraordinary capacity to listen to students were infectious. As others have said, he lit up every room that he was in. He inspired me to become a civil rights lawyer and law professor and to teach, write, and advocate about issues that he cared about.

Summary
During the last decades, there has been no aspect of women's rights in which there has been as much dramatic change as in the law of domestic violence. Fifty years ago, for example, domestic violence was not even recognized as a subject of study or as a legal problem – it was simply invisible. Marriage – the notion that husband and wife were one and that one was the husband – made domestic violence permissible and acceptable.
Today, intimate violence is recognized as a serious harm – a harm within intimate relationships that has an impact on every aspect of the law, from criminal law to torts, reproductive rights, civil rights, employment law, and international human rights, and especially family law. But we have also begun to recognize that intimate violence has profound consequences for women's right to full citizenship and equality and women's right to work, to economic independence, and to health, not only in this country, but around the world. Recognition of the international human rights dimensions of intimate violence is a first step to appreciation of global citizenship.
In this chapter, I briefly highlight some of the ways in which violence affects women's equality and citizenship. I first examine the tremendous changes in recognition of the problem and pervasiveness of intimate violence both in the United States and around the world. Given the profound nature of these changes, I only touch on themes that I have discussed more fully elsewhere.

In this study, we assessed behavioral responses to social separation at 8 months of age and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of biogenic amines and metabolites at 8 and 18 months of age in 12 rhesus monkeys derived from either stressed or undisturbed pregnancies. Compared to controls from undisturbed pregnancies, prenatal stress-derived monkeys had higher concentrations of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid in CSF than controls. Norepinephrine and MHPG response to stress were both correlated between 8 and 18 months of age. There were few group differences in behavior during social separation; however, several behavioral differences between groups were found when monkeys were reunited with cage mates. Prenatally stressed monkeys spent more time clinging to their surrogates and exploring (including eating and drinking), while controls showed more locomotion and social play with their cage mates. Collectively, our findings suggest that chronic unpredictable psychological stress during pregnancy has long-lasting effects on noradrenergic and dopaminergic activity and behavior in the offspring of gestationally stressed primate mothers.

The interrater reliability and concurrent validity of two methods of scoring the ensemble-averaged impedance cardiogram were evaluated. Impedance cardiographic and electrocardiographic signals were recorded from 40 undergraduate men and women during a baseline rest period and a vocal mental arithmetic task period. Recordings were scored by four raters using a conventional method, involving ensemble averaging after careful editing of beat-to-beat waveforms, and a streamlined method, involving ensemble averaging without beat-to-beat editing. Intraclass correlations for interrater reliability exceeded .92, whereas intraclass correlations for concurrent validity exceeded .97, indicating excellent agreement between raters and scoring methods for all cardiac measures. The streamlined method was significantly faster than the conventional method. The results indicate that variations in beat-to-beat editing do not constitute a serious source of error in the ensemble-averaged impedance cardiogram and support the interrater reliability and concurrent validity of the two scoring methods.
